UPI AutoPay vs eNACH for EMI collection

Cashless collection is no longer a strategy question for Indian lenders; it is a rail selection question. Two rails dominate: eNACH and UPI AutoPay. They behave differently, and the right answer is usually a mix.

eNACH: the workhorse

Mandate registration through net-banking or debit card, presentation on the due date, high limits, and years of bank-side maturity. Success rates around 97% are achievable with clean presentation and retry logic. Its weakness is registration friction for borrowers without net-banking.

UPI AutoPay: registration in seconds

A borrower registers a UPI AutoPay mandate on their phone in under a minute, which changes conversion at the point of sale. Limits are lower than NACH and rail behaviour is newer, but for EMI sizes typical in individual and MFI lending it fits well.

What the 68/24 split taught us

  • Offer UPI AutoPay first at onboarding; fall back to eNACH where limits or borrower profile require it.
  • Auto-reconcile both rails to the loan account the moment the credit lands, or the operational saving evaporates in manual tagging.
  • Route bounces into a single exceptions queue with a retry calendar; do not let them scatter across teams.

What Finpage does

FinCollect presents on both rails, reconciles 100% automatically, and queues exceptions. Across 50,000+ collections a day, NACH success holds at 97.4% and no one tags a receipt by hand.
